I know it can feel awkward when you have to tell your family, “Guys, I don’t have a lot of money to spend, so I made you all crocheted socks for Christmas.”
If you don’t want to be that person, know that there are many other gifts you can give that people will enjoy and remember for quite some time.
Here are some examples:
1. A Nice Picture in a Frame
This used to be the gift to give when I was in high school, you know back when people actually printed out pictures. If you’re on a budget, a picture will only cost you a few cents to print out, and a frame will only run you a few dollars. This is a sweet gift because people can put it in their homes, look at it often, and think of you. If you want, you can do something just a little bit nicer and have something printed on canvas. For less than $20, you can give someone a piece of art for their home.
2. An Act of Service
This could be anything from mowing someone’s grass to picking up their groceries. We had so many neighbors and friends do nice things for us when we brought our twins home. From bringing us dinner to folding tons and tons of laundry, we really appreciated all the help along the way. It’s honestly those gifts that meant more to us than anything else. You can walk your elderly neighbor’s dog, weed your sister-in-law’s lawn, pick up your nephew from school, and the list goes on. Doing favors for someone is not only free but it makes you feel good in the process. Give out coupons or certificates with your favor written on them, and don’t forget to follow up with them later.
3. A Potted Plant
I’m not much for gifting a flower arrangement because it seems like a waste of money for something that’s going to die soon. Instead, why not give a potted plant, something that can be transplanted outside to be enjoyed for years to come? You can even give someone a small fruit tree or a rose bush. If the receiver of your gift has a green thumb, they can enjoy your gift for years, which is way better than a pricey flower arrangement.
4. Unique Tea or Coffee
Everyone seems to have their favorite coffee or tea. We tend to use the same brand and style over and over again. So, when you have a tea lover in your home, it can be nice to gift them something a little unique and different. Whether you pick up a pound of a fun, exotic coffee or choose an herbal tea just for relaxing, your loved one will appreciate having something new and different to try without having to spend the money themselves.
Ultimately, gift giving doesn’t have to be pricey. With a little bit of thought, you can give something meaningful, helpful, or fun without breaking the bank.
